"For parents to choose the sex of the unborn
child is neither natural or desirable." Discuss

As technology advances, what have once been perceived as impossibility is now possible. Yes, we are allowed to decide the gender of our child! Using preimplantation genetic diagnosis, we can select the embryo's sex. Although this is an outstanding discovery in the science and medical field, i think that gender selection is not desirable as nature should not be forgotten.

It is argued that parents have their freedom of choice. In some countries such as China, males are generally preferred for various cultual reasons such as the traditional mindset of wanting to carry down the family line. The great importance of this responsibility for all spouses has been emphasised and passed down by our ancesters. Besides, there are other factors such as restricting inheritance of property and the heavy cost of dowries when the daughter are married. Also, having a male child has less parental reponsibility as females tend to be a greater burden in the phase of upbringing. For instance, females are more emotional and therefore requires more love, care and attention.

However, this conception is wrong. It is neither natural nor desirable to choose the gender of an unborn child. In some instances, in china, in view of the one-child policy and cultural factors, the desire for a preferred male child by couples has lead to selective abortion. This will lead to gender imbalance which is highly visible in these countries. These imbalances are socially harmful as in time, more males will be unable to find spouses. For example, in China, it has lead to a rise in sexual violence, kidnapping and forced marriage, and even prostitution. In addition the birth rates will also be adversely affected resulting from less marriages and increasing number of singles.

Moreover, selective abortion is a cruel and inhumane act. How can a human life be treated with such disregard? For example, in china, it has been reported female babies are 'discarded' into drains or left to die in trash bins by their parents the moment when they are born. This butality is totally unacceptable in the society and should be severely critised.

In conclusion, gender selection should not be legalised due to various social and cultural implications. We should follow the right principles and discourage gender discrimination. Giving birth to a new child is a natural process and it should not be tempered with.
